ENIAC contained 17,468 vacuum tubes, 7,200 crystal diodes, 1,500 relays, 70,000 resistors, 10,000 capacitors and around 5 million hand-soldered joints. It weighed more than 30 short tons (27 t), was roughly 8 by 3 by 100 feet (2.4 m × 0.9 m × 30 m), took up 1800 square feet (167 m2), and consumed 150 kW of power. ENIAC used a tremendous amount of energy to perform around 385 operations per second. Also, a lot of area wass required for its storage.

Smartphones are very easy to carry and are very powerful. Due to this low cost and high performance alternative, NASA is working on a project called Phonesat. This project is mainly aimed at building nano-satellites(weighing from one to ten kilograms) and launching them into the Low Earth Orbit.
It was observed that a smartphone had a faster CPU and more memory than the average satellite, one or two cameras, multiple acceleration and rotation sensors, a compass, a GPS receiver, radios, and a Li-Ion battery, all of which had benefited from significant research and development efforts and economies of scale in the telecommunications industry to reduce cost. The project Phonesat was launched to harness the power of smartphones by placing them in small satellites, which were a lot easier to build and economical.
Recently NASA sending 3D Google smartphones for robots to space station. NASA has been working on these nano – satellites since 2009 and the Phonesat versions are updated as newer smartphones are released.
